Robert Prey is a media scholar at the University of Groningen and Associate Professor of Digital Culture at the Oxford Internet Institute who studies the relationship between technology, capitalism and culture. His research and writings focus on algorithmic recommendation systems and the interdependent processes of 'datafication' and 'platformization'. His current focus is on music streaming platforms and the music, musicians and industry developing around them. He recently began a 5-year research project called “The Platformization of Music: Towards a Global Theory”. Funded by the European Research Council, the project investigates how streaming and social media platforms influence the creative practices, identities, and working conditions of musicians in the Netherlands, Nigeria and South Korea.
